WHO MAY APPLY?
Any freshmen Golden LEAF Scholarship recipients may apply.
DO I HAVE TO BE A LEADER TO APPLY?
You do not need to have any prior leadership experience to apply.
HOW DO I APPLY?
You can apply online by visiting the Golden LEAF Scholars Leadership Program homepage at: www.goldenleafleaders.com.
WHEN IS THE DEADLINE TO APPLY?
All applications must be received by November 17, 2017.
WHEN WILL I KNOW IF I HAVE BEEN SELECTED?
All accepted applicants will receive confirmation of acceptance by November 24, 2017.
DO I HAVE TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS PROGRAM TO KEEP MY SCHOLARSHIP?
No. Participation in this program is not required in order to keep your scholarship. This is a unique opportunity to participate in a new and exciting leadership program created by the Golden LEAF Foundation and administered by the Center for Creative Leadership.
WHY SHOULD I APPLY TO PARTICIPATE?
Through this program you will gain valuable information that you can apply to college, career and life. You will build your leadership skills and work with a personal coach to help you set and reach your goals. You will then have an opportunity to practice your skills in a PAID summer internship experience based on your interests.
HOW MUCH IS THE FINANCIAL STIPEND?
Financial stipends range between $2800 – $2920 depending on your year in the program.
WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY STIPEND MONEY?
With this being your first year in the program, the stipend schedule is as follows:
- After completing the January 12-14, 2018 leadership training you will receive $150.00;
- After completing your Internship Agreement Form you will receive $150.00;
- After completing your 6 week summer internship you will receive approximately $2,400.00 (again this is based on your year in the program)
- After completing the August 31 – September 2, 2018 retreat you will receive $100.00.
DO I HAVE TO ATTEND ALL OF THE SCHEDULED EVENTS?
Yes. Participation in this program requires your commitment to attend ALL scheduled events.
HOW DO I GET TO THE PIEDMONT TRIAD IF I DON’T HAVE A CAR?
We will work with you to arrange transportation to and from the Piedmont Triad for the January and September retreats. We will provide transportation to and from the hotel. You will receive travel information prior to the leadership retreats.
WHO PAYS FOR MY HOTEL AND TRAVEL COSTS FOR THE JANUARY AND SEPTEMBER RETREATS?
The program covers all the hotel and meal costs for attending the leadership training in Greensboro.
WILL THE SCHEDULED EVENTS CONFLICT WITH MY SCHOOL SCHEDULE?
All program events have been scheduled around the 2017-2018 academic calendars, so there should not be any conflict with your school schedule.
AM I RESPONSIBLE FOR GETTING AN INTERNSHIP OR DOES SOMEONE ELSE HELP WITH THAT?
You and your coach will work together to explore your interests and find an internship location based on those interests.
WHERE CAN I DO MY SUMMER INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE? DO I HAVE TO GO BACK HOME?
All summer internship experiences must take place in a qualifying rural, economically distressed and/or tobacco dependent county.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I HAVE TO GO TO SUMMER SCHOOL?
Your summer internship experience can work around your summer school schedule and can occur anytime between the months of May – August 2018.
HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO COMPLETE MY SUMMER PROJECT OR INTERNSHIP?
The summer internship experience must be completed by August 10, 2018.
WHAT IF MY PROJECT OR INTERNSHIP LASTS LONGER THAN 6 WEEKS?
The stipend for a 6 week internship is approximately $2,400.00. You may continue your internship beyond the 6 week period. However, there are no additional stipend funds to cover that time. You may consider asking the internship organization to pay you beyond your stipend.
WILL I BE ALLOWED TO WORK A SUMMER JOB WHILE I DO MY INTERNSHIP?
You may work summer jobs while completing your 6 week summer internship experience if you can also meet all of your internship requirements.
AM I ABLE TO START MY INTERNSHIP BEFORE JUNE 1?
You may be able to start your internship prior to May 2018, if we are able to complete all of the logistics and have all of the paperwork completed.

WHO IS THE GOLDEN LEAF FOUNDATION?
The Golden LEAF Foundation is a nonprofit organization established in 1999 to help transform North Carolina’s economy. The foundation receives one-half of North Carolina’s funds from the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement with cigarette manufacturers and places special emphasis on assisting tobacco-dependent, economically distressed and/or rural communities across the state. The Golden LEAF Foundation works in partnership with governmental entities, educational institutions, economic development organizations and nonprofits to achieve its mission.
